with Frida Pernesten. We live at a fascinating point in history and the story of Hilma af Klint illustrates many of the reasons why. Born into a family of cartographers, Hilma af Klint was a Swedish painter and mystic who set about mapping the spirit world. Her work was unappreciated during her time, but Hilma af Kint envisaged a future in which it would be understood. In her will, she stipulated that the paintings be kept secret until decades after her death. Today, she is a sensation in the art world and considered a pioneer of abstract art. I was first introduced to her work through my friend and mentor Frida Pernesten. Here we discuss the occult turn of the century, the mysterious group of five women who practiced as spiritual mediums, and how mysticism is regarded in Swedish society today.
I so recommend this beautiful book, Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future, from the Guggenheim Museum https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/hilma-af-klint
